Coconut water, a perfect match for spicy food
Nat visutthikraisee,
Fans of Mexican and Thai cuisines, take note: Do you know which beverages to avoid and which beverages to pair with the hot and spicy dishes?

coconut water has long been a popular drink in the tropics, especially in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, such as Hawaii, and the Caribbean, the place where Spicy Food is enjoyed.

What causes spiciness? A chemical known as capsaicin. This capsaicin causes a burning irritation. The hotness of a chili pepper is measured in Scoville Heat Units, named after the US pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. In 1912 he invented a test to measure how hot chilies could be. On the Scoville scale, a sweet pepper scores 0, a jalapeño pepper around 3000 and a Mexican habañero a scorching 500,000.

"Thai food is often hot and spicy. If you are not used to spicy food, a glass of sugarcane or coconut water could save your pallet!"

ome beverages will amp up the heat and make your food taste hotter -- and set your mouth on fire. And some will cool and calm the fire in the food and mellow everything out.

If you eat something that is overly spicy, have a glass of coconut water handy. Coconut water will more effectively relieve the burn on your tongue than water. The reason for this is that sugar is useful for killing heat. Water doesn't contain any sugar, so it is not effective.

Contrary to popular belief, water doesn't do very well in easing pain caused by having spicy food.

"Every time I have coconut water, it tames the burning sensation of spicy food."

ne cup-full of coconut water also contains more electrolytes than most sports drinks and more potassium than a banana. It is naturally fat-free and low in food energy (16.7 calories or 70 kilojoules per 100 grams).

Ever since humans worked out how to crack that thick, fibrous husk, coconut water has been quenching the thirst of the sun-drenched tropics. But with the soaring popularity of spicy food, this looks like being the time we all go for it.
